Behind the Lens

Hi, I’m Beth, the photographer behind Beth Hicks Photography. I’m predominantly an equine and canine photographer and am based around the UK.

I’m currently doing a BSc (Hons) Equestrian Sports Science degree at Hartpury College, so it’s hard to say that I’m based in one particular area as I move around a bit, depending on the academic calender. So, term time, I tend to work predominantly around Gloucestershire and surrounding counties, and during the holidays around Cambridgeshire, where I’m originally from. However, I do travel as well!

I’ve been around horses, ever since I was 5 (I’m nearly 21 now), starting my equine journey in a local riding school and eventually progressing to riding horses in exchange for yard jobs within the past 5-6 years ago. I have very non-horsey parents, although I have gradually tried to change this, but actually got referred to riding by a local GP to help with my dyspraxia (they suggested ballet first but that didn’t turn out so well). And 15, nearly 16 years later, I’ve still got a huge love for everything equine, and still ride regularly, and have even been known to play a bit of polo as well!

I’ve always been quite creative, having enjoyed drawing and painting from a young age, and occasionally had a play on one my family’s many digital cameras over the years. Then, during sixth form, I decided I wanted to get myself a DSLR and know how to use it, before I went to Bolivia to work in a wildlife sanctuary as wanted to document my time there as wasn’t going to take my phone! This then brought about another new love, which was photography, and I’ve been taking photos ever since. The photography has then grown further and has started to form into a small business, that I can use to help supplement my student loans etc. whilst at University, with the idea that I would love to be able to make it one of my main sources of income, when I leave University.

I love capturing horses and their owners, showcasing the bond between the two, and letting them keep these moments forever through the photo’s I take, and the same for dogs and their owners. I also love learning about the story between each pairing, as you can probably tell from the blog posts I write for each photo shoots, since not one is the same!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Beth 🙂
